What Is a Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens is the first and only intraocular lens (IOL) that allows for non-invasive adjustments after surgery. Unlike traditional lenses, the LAL can be precisely modified using special UV light treatments, allowing you and your doctor to “test drive” your vision and fine-tune it until it’s just right.

This breakthrough option is ideal for patients who want more control over their visual outcome, especially those with a history of LASIK, complex prescriptions, or high visual demands.

Who Is a Candidate for the LAL?

The Light Adjustable Lens may be right for you if:

  • You are undergoing cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange (RLE)
  • You want the flexibility to customize your vision after surgery
  • You’ve had previous laser eye surgery (like LASIK or PRK)
  • You have astigmatism or complex prescriptions that require high precision
  • You are highly motivated to reduce your dependence on glasses

We’ll evaluate your eye health and vision goals during a comprehensive consultation at our Miami office to determine if you’re a candidate.

How the Light Adjustable Lens Works

The process involves three key steps:

  1. Lens Implantation – During cataract or RLE surgery, your natural lens is replaced with the Light Adjustable Lens.
  2. Healing Period – You wear special UV-blocking glasses and allow the eye to heal (typically 2-3 weeks).
  3. UV Light Customization – Using a painless in-office procedure, we apply ultraviolet light to the lens to adjust its shape and fine-tune your vision. Most patients need none to 2 treatments but can be treated up to 3 times to optimal vision.

Once you’re satisfied with the clarity, a final “lock-in” treatment seals the lens shape, locking in your personalized correction.

Benefits of the Light Adjustable Lens

  • Unmatched Precision – Tailor your vision based on real-world experience, not just pre-surgical measurements.
  • Better Outcomes – Especially helpful for patients with previous refractive surgery or unusual eye anatomy.
  • Glasses-Free Lifestyle – Many patients achieve sharp vision without the need for glasses or contacts.
  • Confidence in Your Results – Adjustments ensure you get the best vision possible.

What to Expect After Surgery

Post-surgery, you’ll wear UV-protective glasses until your final light treatment is complete. This protects the lens from unintended adjustments. Once the “lock-in” treatment is done, you can return to normal light exposure and enjoy your new vision.

Our Miami-based team will walk you through every step of the process and provide detailed guidance for a smooth and successful outcome.
